I'm taking part in Walk For A CureWhy I’m Putting One Foot in Front of the Other
On July 26th I’ll be walking 5km to raise money and awareness for dementia research and support services. Not only will I be doing this walk then, it would also have been my Mum and Dads 40th wedding anniversary. 👰🏼🤵🏻 This isn’t just a challenge for me – it’s a walk I’m taking for my dad 💜
In 2016, my dad was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia – a condition I’d barely heard of before, but one that would change our lives forever. Lewy body dementia shares some symptoms with both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease: it steals memory, clarity, balance, and the ability to recognise loved ones, and brings terrifying confusion and hallucinations that feel so real to those experiencing them. For years, we watched the man who raised us, had a dry sense of humour, and who always had so much love to give, slowly fade away.
He passed away in 2018, and not a day goes by that I don’t miss him. But what hurts most is knowing how little support and understanding there is for people living with this condition, and how far we still have to go to find answers. Lewy body dementia is often misdiagnosed, and research into it – and all forms of dementia – is still underfunded. Right now, 1 in 2 people in the UK will know someone affected by dementia, and that number is rising.
I’m walking because no one should have to watch someone they love disappear without hope.
So far, Rachel has helped fund 2 hours of essential lab time for our amazing scientists.
