I'm taking part in Walk For A Cure for Alzheimer’s
I'm taking part in Walk For A Cure because I want to help end the devastation of dementia.
My mum was diagnosed 2 years ago with Alzheimer’s and this has affected our whole family. It is such a cruel illness that you have no control over. Watching the person you love change day by day and see their personality, habits, emotions and health deteriorate bit by bit is devastating. My mum and I always saw each other every day and we also phoned too - we never ran out of things to talk about - she was my go to person, my best friend to share news and ask advice from. Nowadays mum lives with us whilst we care for her. The roles are reversed - it’s the least I can do after everything she has done for me and my family. I just really wish I could have my old mum back, the way she was before she got Alzheimer’s. It’s time a cure was found for this, so that in the future people do not suffer and friends and family are spared from watching their loved ones’ deteriorate bit by bit. Love and hug your loved ones while you can and take nothing for granted as one day you will miss them so, so much - although they are there, they are “not really there” !
