Walk for a Cure - Edinburgh

I'm taking part in Walk For A Cure

I'm taking part in Walk For A Cure because I want to help end the devastation of dementia.

In November 2023, my dad was diagnosed with mixed dementia.

This means he’s living with more than one type of dementia, in his case, both vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Vascular dementia is something we, heartbreakingly, already know too well - it’s the illness that took my Grandma in 2020. To now see my dad facing the same journey is devastating.

Vascular dementia is caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, often after a stroke, and affects memory, thinking, and reasoning.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurological condition that slowly impacts memory, speech, behaviour, and the ability to carry out everyday tasks.

Since his diagnosis, Dad has been supported by his local GP, hospital teams, and Alzheimer’s charities, all of whom have been a lifeline in what has been a confusing and emotional time. As a family, we know the road ahead won’t be easy. We’ll need more support, more guidance, and more care and charities like Alzheimer’s UK will be there every step of the way.

1 in 2 of us will develop some form of dementia, and right now, there is no cure. Alzheimer’s UK will use the money raised to keep fighting for a cure.

Watching my dad change day by day because of this illness is heartbreaking. Dementia is a cruel disease. It takes the person you knew and loved and reshapes them into someone new and somehow, you grieve and love at the same time.

I’m raising funds to give something back to help ensure more families like mine have access to the help they desperately need. Your donation, however big or small, means the world. Together, we can support those living with dementia today and hope for a future where a diagnosis doesn’t come without options.

Thank you so much for reading and for your support.
