Walk for a Cure - Edinburgh

🌿 I'm taking part in a Walk For A Cure 🕊

Hey All 🙂

As some of you know, one of my favourite movies is The Notebook 📔. When Allie got older, she had dementia. Her beloved husband Noah was reading to her at the care home in trying to help her to remember her life, and their love story. ♥️

In late 2023, I came across a book 📚 (in the local charity shop) called "Somebody I used to know" by Wendy Mitchell. Wendy was sharing her story of dementia. Since reading the book, the topic of dementia has been close to my heart - I was only 38 at that time, but I realised that one day it could also be my story because anyone can potentially develop dementia, and at the moment, there is no cure.

Wendy was diagnosed with dementia at the age of 58 and has been an advocate for living positively with dementia through her blog ✍️ “Which me am I today”, and through her books until her death at the age of 68 on February 22, 2024.

I'm taking part in Walk For A Cure 🌿 because I want to raise awareness, help to find a cure, and end the devastation of dementia.

Alzheimer's Research UK is the UK's leading dementia research charity, dedicated to finding a cure ☣️.

Research is our only chance of stopping dementia 🙅‍♀️ in its tracks and offering hope to the many families affected.

Your donation 💰 will fuel cutting-edge research that could uncover new life-changing treatments, bringing us closer to a cure.

If you are in Edinburgh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, feel free to join my Team for this walk on the 20th July 2025. Team name: Dementia-CureX.

Thank you for your support. 💜

Best wishes,

Natalie

Dementia Fact #3: Dementia and Physical Activity

Sunday 13th Jul
Less than a week left until the Walk for a Cure! 😀 Thanks a lot to the lovely sponsors who supported over the last few weeks! 🥰

If you are in Edinburgh on the 20th July, feel free to join my team, Dementia-CureX, for the Alzheimer’s Research UK - Walk for a Cure. It’s a family-friendly 5km walk in the Holyrood Park area.

As it is now school holidays time here - all last week was busy for me getting out and about with the kids. I have finished listening to Wendy Mitchell’s book “What I Wish People Knew About Dementia,” which is an invaluable source of what it is like to live with this condition. And, being out daily with the kids, made me curious whether exercise can help prevent dementia. Thus, I found the Alzheimer’s Society website with some information. Studies have found that individuals who engage in regular physical activity may have up to a 20% lower risk of developing dementia compared to those who do not exercise regularly. This conclusion is based on an analysis that combined data from 58 separate studies examining the link between exercise and dementia.
Physical activity refers to aerobic exercise that increases the heart rate and is performed 20-30 minutes at a time, or a strength-building activity.

Dementia Fact #2: Dementia and Social Isolation

Wednesday 2nd Jul
According to Dementia UK, being socially isolated may raise the risk of developing dementia. This is partly because individuals who are lonely or lack social connections often engage in less physical activity, receive reduced social interaction, and have a higher likelihood of experiencing depression, all of which are associated with dementia.
Research has also found that social isolation can lead to changes in parts of the brain that are vital for memory, learning, and thinking.

Dementia Fact #1: Dementia can affect people younger than 65

Monday 30th Jun
Was catching up on Wendy Mitchell’s audiobook this weekend.
If you are also interested in dementia topic, I highly recommend to check it out.

Dementia Fact #1:
According to the Alzheimer’s Research UK, dementia doesn’t only affect older people. Dementia symptoms can develop in younger people under the age of 65, and there are over 70k people in the UK who are living with the young onset dementia in the UK.
