Turning Loss Into Purpose

Dementia is a cruel illness. It doesn’t just take memories - it slowly takes away the people we love while they are still here.

In 2025 I lost my both my nan and grandad to dementia, and watching them go through it was one of the hardest experiences my family has ever faced. Seeing strong, lovely people become confused, frightened and unable to recognise the people around them is heartbreaking in a way that is difficult to put into words.

My grandparents were such a huge part of my life. They were the people who filled childhood with warmth, laughter, stories and unconditional love. Dementia slowly changed all of that. Conversations became harder. Familiar moments became fewer. Eventually, it felt like we were losing pieces of them long before we had to say goodbye.

What makes dementia especially painful is that it affects everyone around the person suffering. Families become carers. Loved ones carry emotional exhaustion, grief and helplessness while trying to stay strong for one another. It’s something no family is ever truly prepared for.

That’s why I’ve decided to take part in this charity event.

I’m doing this in memory of my nan and grandad, but also for every family currently facing the same journey. No one should have to feel alone while dealing with dementia. The support dementia charities provide - from research and care services to advice and emotional support for families - can make an enormous difference during such difficult times.

Taking part in this event is my way of giving something back and helping raise awareness of a disease that affects so many people. Every donation, every message of support, and every conversation about dementia helps shine a line on an illness that too often stays hidden behind closed doors.

If you’ve experienced dementia in your own family, you’ll understand how deeply it impacts every part of life. And if you haven’t, I hope this helps people understand why support and research are so important.

I’ll be carrying my grandparents with me every step of the way during this event. This is for them

And this if for everyone who has loved someone with dementia.
