Walk For A Cure
Alzheimer’s can be a cruel disease, it can change someone’s personality, make them forget all their achievements and fond memories to leave them existing on repeat in their own confused state of mind.
My nan, mum and uncle all had/have Alzheimer’s. I don’t remember much about my nan’s battle with the disease other than visiting her in hospital and that she had a habit for ‘wandering’ as I was 9yrs when she passed away.
My uncle was a fantastic pianist and highly regarded vicar/Area Dean of London until his retirement. Luckily though he has forgotten how to play the piano, all the travelling he has done and many good works, he has kept his happy demeanour and enjoyment for spending time with friends and family.
For my mum however, Alzheimer’s has not been as forgiving. As time progresses she refuses care more and her behaviour and personality has completely shifted. She would be mortified to see herself now :-(
She doesn’t recognise family, we’re ‘nice’ people, mumma, grandma or grandad. Daily she gets agitated, can get aggressive with nursing staff and is searching for the children or asking to go home. Our experience has also shown that there are limited to none suitable care homes that can cope with the extremities of Alzheimer’s and the costs are astounding.
We’re taking part with friends to Walk For A Cure in the hope that further research will provide earlier diagnosis and significant improvements in treatments.
So far, Bean Team have helped fund 24 hours of essential lab time for our amazing scientists
