Fox’s Den: The Meaning

My grandmother was most certainly the hardest working woman that I’ve ever known. She graduated from the Nationwide Beauty Academy in 1964 and became a beautician. Shortly after, she opened her own salon and named it the Fox’s Den. After retiring from cutting hair, she had the Fox’s Den sign hung up on her shed in the back yard. I remember seeing that sign every day as a kid and just hoping that one day I could grow up to be as driven and successful as her.

Though she was taken far too soon, she achieved so much in her 73 years of life. She was extremely involved in her community. Grandma was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. She served on the Football Mother’s Club, Little League, and was President of the Bowling League. She was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, United Way and Business & Processional Women’s Club.

While my grandma loved serving her community, she equally enjoyed her time at home. She worked around the clock making her home a fun and inviting place for everyone. The DIY and home improvement projects were endless. She built the most beautiful walk through garden, with weaving paths, benches, and a cute little frog pond. Her house was always full of wonderful smelling food as she was always cooking or baking something. My childhood was full of memories in the kitchen with my grandma, watching her make me homemade chicken and dumplings when I was sick or chocolate chip pancakes with homemade syrup, or her famous peanut butter rice crispy treats that had everyone begging for more.

Grandma brought so much joy and light into this world. It’s an honor to walk in her memory.

Walking for you, grandma 🧡

Four years ago I lost my grandmother to Alzheimer's and was completely heart broken. She was one of the amazing women who helped raise me and it was so hard to not have her beside me as my life continued to move on. I know she would've loved to be able to watch me marry the love of my life, and soak up all the baby cuddles as we welcomed our little boy into the world. She was an absolute treasure and I was completely unaware how quickly this disease would rip her away from us.

In a few weeks, I'll be walking for a cure to help fund Alzheimer's research. Our team will be walking in memory of my grandmother, but I know there are so many more that have been affected by this disease. If you can, please consider donating as each donation helps scientists and researchers find new ways to diagnose dementia, develop new treatments and find a cure.
